Prerequisites: Integrating PowerBI into WiredUp - Part 1

Overview

Once your PowerBI Report embedding has been set up, you can now integrate that report into your WiredUp system. This article provides a step-by-step approach on how the PowerBI integration into WiredUp can be achieved.

Step-by-Step Integration Process

Ensure your service account has been added to your PowerBI workspace before attempting the integration

Step 1: Access WiredUp Configuration

  1. Log into the WiredUp portal
  2. For PMO clients, navigate to "Portfolios" and for CI clients, navigate to "Administration > Organisational Structure"
  3. Select "Site Configuration" from the 3-bar menu
  4. Navigate to "Settings" under the "System" section
  5. On the Settings screen, click on Reports and complete the following fields:
    • Power BI Client ID & Power BI Client Secret Key from the app registration step.
    • Admin Azure username of the service account
    • Admin Azure Password of the service account
    • Azure Tenant ID: This is the Directory ID located under Azure Active Directory

Step 3: Embedding your PowerBI Report

  1. Navigate to the "Site Configuration" settings in Portfolios or Organisational Structure
  2. Select "Power BI Reports" under the "General" section
  3. Click on "+Add" to add a new report and complete the following:
    • Name of the report
    • Embed (Report) URL. To obtain your embed URL, follow the steps below
      • In your PowerBI report, click on "File" in the top menu
      • Select "Embed report"
      • Choose "SharePoint Online"
      • Copy the generated URL
      • Paste this URL into the WiredUp configuration
    • Group ID - Found in the URL of your PowerBI report (not the SharePoint link)
    • Report ID – Found in the URL of your PowerBI report
    • Dataset ID - Click on “datasets” section in the app workspace in Power BI Service and select the dataset of the report. The dataset ID is visible in the dataset URL.
    • Roles - Select the Roles that can view this report (e.g. BI team, Administrator etc.). This access is configured on Administration > Roles when the 'View Power BI Reports' permission is enabled.

Step 4: Verify Integration

  1. Navigate to the "Reports" section in WiredUp
  2. Locate your newly added report
  3. Verify that the report loads correctly
  4. Test access with different user roles to ensure proper permissions

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Verify that you're using the PowerBI report URL (not SharePoint embed URL) when collecting Group and Report IDs
  • Double-check that all three IDs (Group, Report, Dataset) are correctly entered
  • If the report doesn't load, verify that the embed URL was generated correctly from PowerBI
  • Contact your system administrator if you encounter permission issues
