Overview

In some use cases, you may want to use a variable baseline or target in your Idea/Initiative VDT. WiredUp Idea/Initiatives allows you to either set ("hardcode") values for the baseline or target in the VDT, or source these values from the KPI. Sourcing these values from the KPI is known as a "variable" baseline or target.

VDT Views

The Idea/Initiative has three views that can be switched to when viewing the VDT. These are (1) Baseline, (2) Variance, and (3) Benefit. These views will update the fields on the node to provide different information in each.

Baseline View

The Baseline view is a special view that displays the baseline or target values that have been entered directly into the nodes on the VDT. This view does not source values from KPIs.

Note: The node settings modal (pop-up) is shared between all views and will always displays the same fields. All fields do not impact all views as explained in this article.

As the baseline view does not source values from KPIs, baseline and Target values must be entered for each of the nodes in the VDT tree. These values are then used in the node expressions to calculate the output in the output (leftmost) node.

The Improvement field displays the difference between the Baseline and the Target values in each node.

Variance View

The Variance view displays the Target and month-to-date (MTD) actual values plus the variance (difference) between them.

The MTD Actual is always sourced from the KPI, but can be overridden by entering a Default Value in the node settings. If a Default Value is not specified, then the value will be sourced from the KPI.

The Target value is sourced from the KPI if the Use KPI variable target for benefit calculation checkbox is checked and sourced from the Target field in the node settings if the checkbox is unset.

In the example below, the Use KPI variable target for benefit calculation checkbox is checked and therefore the value for Target will be sourced from the KPI. if the checkbox was not set, the Target value would be 499.

Benefit View

The Benefit view displays the Baseline (either sourced from the KPI or set in node settings depending on the Use KPI variable baseline for benefit calculation checkbox), the MTD Actual and the difference between the, as the Benefit.

Note: If the Use KPI variable target/baseline for benefit calculation checkbox is set, you must ensure that the KPI has up to date values for the value to display in the VDT node.

How to set a variable baseline or target

To source a variable baseline from the KPI, the Use KPI variable baseline for benefit calculation checkbox must be set and the KPI must have up-to-date values for the baseline.

To source a variable target from the KPI, the Use KPI variable target for benefit calculation checkbox must be set and the KPI must have up-to-date values for the target.

How does it display on the Benefit Grid

To view the Benefit Grid, navigate to the Benefit page and click on the Grid link to the right above the chart. Scroll down to see the VDT View which displays all the calculated values from the VDT.

Expand the VDT View until you can see your KPI.

The baseline row (red arrow) has been set to source variable values from the KPI in the example above. It sourced the Default Baseline value (699) from the KPI for Jan 2023 to Jun 2023 after which the variable baseline values (500, 520, 540, 560) are sourced from Jul 2023 to Oct 2023 after which it returns to the Default Baseline value. This is because variable baseline values have only been set for Jul 2023 to Oct 2023.

The target row (blue arrow) has also been set to source variable values from the KPI in the example above. It sourced the Default Target value (499) from the KPI for Jan 2023 to Aug 2023 after which the variable baseline values (444, 555) are sourced from Sep 2023 to Oct 2023 after which it returns to the Default Target value. This is because variable target values have only been set for Sep 2023 to Oct 2023.
